WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.
Why We Are Needed
There are several problems facing children who suffer long-term medical hair loss. Most wigs sold by retailers are made to fit adult heads, and are much too big for children to wear. They often require the use of tape or glue to keep them from falling off, and these adhesives can burn or irritate the scalp. Often, the styles of adult wigs are not age-appropriate and synthetic wigs can mat and frizz with excessive styling.
The hair prosthetics Locks of Love provides are custom-made from donated ponytails for each child’s head. They retail between $3,500 to $6,000. The hairpiece forms a vacuum seal, like a suction cup, and does not require the use of tape or glue. Only the wearer of the hairpiece may remove it, by breaking the vacuum seal at the temples. Children can dismiss insecurities about classmates pulling off their hairpiece, or losing it at recess. They can swim, shower and do gymnastics – in short, they can be kids again. Each hairpiece is made from real human hair, and arrives long, so the recipient may style it to fit their face.

12 Days of Christmas- day 12

The Teacher gifts are done and ready to be delivered today.  Yeah!!  I LOVE the final result of this teacher gift...  in the final packaging I wrapped the gloves around the bottom of the mug, with 1 thumb through the handle.  It looks like someone is already enjoying the warmth of Hot Cocoa!!  LOL!!  Oh, the Mug is decorated with SU! Icicle Rub-ons.  The snowflake on the gloves is from the snowflakes set for the Big Shot, and the color on the gloves is a fabric spray dye. The hardest part about this project was putting the final package together.  My original plan didn't turn out as good as I wanted, but the second attempt was MUCH better!!  I thought the white tissue kinda looks like whip cream  and steam.  Maybe it's just me..lol!  Making the mug and gloves was very easy, and my kids had a blast helping with the gloves!  Lots of giggles!

12 Days of Christmas- day 11

I ran out of treat cups, so I couldn't make any more of the Medallion M&M's... boo!  So, I had to come up with another idea for a nice teacher gift, but for the secondary teacher's of my youngest two.  I think this turned out quite nice, and I'm not tellin' what's inside!!!

12 Days of Christmas- day 10

I just finished this card... really!  I am so proud of it, I had to post it right away!!  I've been working on this card for weeks.  Staring at the "Let there be Light" stamp from the Holiday Mini Catalog, and trying to put together a card that will be as special to the recipient as he is to our family.  I think it turned out well!!

12 Days of Christmas- day 8

Oops!!  I forgot to post this one!  See what happens when I don't get enough sleep.  LOL!!  This is a sweet little card, and some day it will be for a sweet little girl!

My Digital Studio Christmas Card- Phase 1

I got an idea the other day, and created this card on the My Digital Studio.  I'm not done with it, this is only Phase 1.  I'm working on ironing out the bugs on Phase 2.  I hate to leave you in suspense, but it is that time of the year.. where anticipation builds and builds everyday, until POW! it's here and the cheering begins!!

More Medallion fun!!!

Ok, so I decided to post this here first... after all it's my blog!!  LOL!!  The kids wanted to give there teachers something really cool for Christmas... and I didn't want to spend a fortune.  So, I thought about the cards I made earlier this month with the Medallion Stamp.  I played around with some ideas, and thought.... emboss!  Yummy!  But, I didn't have enough sweet treat cups to make all the cards... so I improvised.  I think both cards turned out quite nice, and the teachers will LOVE them!!  My eldest son is in Jr. High... he has like 7 teachers and 3 coaches!  Ugh!  Anyway, this is the card I'm going to post for the 7th day of 12 days of Christmas Challenge... and you get the scoop first!!  Yeah!!

12 Days of Christmas Challenge- day 6

Introducing Flakes!!  He's a rootin' tootin' snowboy, who loves to kick up his heels, and tip his hat for the ladies.  Be sure to leave him a little note.. he loves comments!!

I thought about it, and realized that I should include a picture of my inspiration for Flakes.  It's a candle holder I spotted in the Gold Canyon Candle Catalog.  I had so much fun making Flakes, I really need to make one more for the GCC Rep!  And, get the candle holder!!  lol!!

12 Days of Christmas Challenge- day 1 and day 2

Day 1-
Tie Dyed Circle Circus.
It's so much fun to make tie dyed clothes, I thought I'd make a bright, fun card for a friends birthday!  And of course, no card is complete without a matching envelope!!

Day 2-
Trendy Trees Christmas Card
They say that you learn a new trick in life everyday.  Well, today it was making hills... really wasn't hard, but I'd never tried it before.  So, I'm pretty proud of the outcome!  These trees are sooo cute!!  I just wish the picture was a little brighter.  It's hard to see the snowflakes in the sky.  They are there!!  I used clear embossing powder on the snowflakes and the trees.

Medallion Treats

What's more fun than getting a hand made card?  Getting one with Green M&M's!!!  LOL!!  I am so hooked on this stamp!!  It has to be the best purchase I've made so far!!  And I FiNaLlY tried the two tone technique.. I'm so proud of myself!!  LOL!!

I just wish it wasn't so early in the morning before they were finished!!!  Just another Late Night Stamper!!

Teacher Gifts

I got really lucky!  I found the glass at the local dollar store, and the gloves were 2 for 1!!  I have a really hard time deciding on what to do for my kids teachers.  I thought this would be something fun!  I took the Mug and put some cocoa in it (wrapped up, of course), then I took the gloves and made it look like they were holding the mug of cocoa.  I don't think I like the packaging, and I just found some cool cellophane!  I'm gonna work with the packaging, but anyway... this is the end result... so far!!!

Dec 9, 2009

Oh, the weather outside is frightful...

But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of Pausing,
And I've bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally kiss goodnight,
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight,
All the way home I'll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we're still good-byeing,
But as long as you love me so,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

The snow is falling, and the sky had a beautiful purple hue, as the sun set.  What a beautiful moment!  But, then realizing that we had to move all the snow from the drive and the walk, the moment was over.  Yet, with this image in my head, check back to see how this has inspired me!!  Yeah!!

I Do!!

Created with My Digital Studio.  I have had so much fun with this program!  Love It!  LOVE IT!  LOVE IT!

Warm Christmas Hug- gift certificate holder

This was my first attempt at hands.  I needed to come up with a great holder for my gift certificates, and I love this one!!  To keep the card closed, I punched 2 small holes between the fingers and threaded black twine through the holes and tied it into a bow.  The ornament has a loop on top that hangs from the bow.  Such fun!!

XOXO- For Challenge #47

I love the final outcome!  I've had this idea for a while, just had to sit down and do it!  So, when challenge #47 Hugs and Kisses came about, it was time.  I think my favorite feature of the card is the ring... it's a brad that I put through the finger and then used the post to wrap back around the finger.  FUN!!  And I was able to use the XOXO stamp from Define Your Life... well the challenge IS called Hugs and Kisses..right!

More Matchbook goodies!!

These were fun!  I just finished making 60 of these!  They are about an inch taller than the other Matchbooks I've made before.  This is so you can put a business card in the pocket with the chocolate.  I was also able to use up some of the retired in-color cardstock I have.  Yeah!!
